Clinical Supervision

…WITh a LiberaTIONIST TWIST

Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.
— Fannie Lou Hamer, National Women's Political Caucus, Washington D.C., July 10, 1971

Clinical supervision in mental health, when seen through the lens of liberation frameworks and abolitionism, encourages us to shake up the usual ways we do things. It’s about questioning the power dynamics and structures of oppression that are built into mental health practices. This approach is all about social justice, pushing us to break down those imbalances of power. We’ve got to acknowledge how systemic inequities affect both clients and practitioners, and focus on healing that centers community well-being, support, and collective healing. It’s time to step away from traditional models and create a world where everyone can thrive together!

Jacqueline “Jackie” Abeling, Ma, LmFT, RmFT

Licensed/Registered Marriage and Family Therapist | AAMFT-Approved Supervisor | Certified Body Trust® Provider

I help neurospicy folx create more flexibility in their thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors–all in the name of liberation. This work helps address things like perfectionism, procrastination, and having a difficult relationship with food, body image, and movement. I also help those who may have really high expectations for themselves and others. I am a Body Trust® Certified Provider and my work is informed by the Health At Every Size® Principles. I help Associates develop a liberatory consciousness of their own so they can become more liberated themselves and help their clients do the same!

I am the owner of Embodied Journeys Psychotherapy and I am proud to support up-and-coming MFTs and other mental health professionals by providing guidance in navigating the clinical, legal, ethical, and business complexities of this profession. I am an AAMFT-Approved Supervisor in Minnesota and Washington.

My Guiding Frameworks

Considering my systemic training, my approach to therapy and supervision is a blended Bowenian-Narrative approach, which combines a systemic understanding of family and societal dynamics and the challenges of balancing autonomy and connectedness, with a focus on externalizing individual concerns, challenging dominant narratives, and centering personal stories and experiences. Moreover, my approach is further enriched, deepened, and nuanced with the inclusion of Feminist Family Therapy, liberation psychology, and abolitionist principles, which recognize the harmful impact of oppressive power structures–including the ones in the mental health profession–on individuals, families, and communities. Finally, I am committed to body and fat liberation and incorporate weight-inclusive principles in my work as well.
